I do use broadband very significantly in my daily work - Skype calls, conference calls, webinars, as well as emails and online research - probably 4+ hours per day.

Is it possible to claim this expense as a legitimate business expense? I have had broadband in the house before this job, and also obviously use it somewhat for home use (when I get time!)

Thanks in advance for your response...

JohnJohn Pnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-30380414445012517202012-01-08T14:54:49.901-08:002012-01-08T14:54:49.901-08:00Very useful summary.Very useful summary.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-14196119540591066962012-01-08T14:07:00.940-08:002012-01-08T14:07:00.940-08:00Thanks for the clear informationThanks for the clear informationAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-23891379287693123692011-10-27T10:31:02.968-07:002011-10-27T10:31:02.968-07:00Hi there,

I'm a rep but most of my time is spent in my office at home so I've found the heating and electricity bills have increased a lot since I moved from an office situation.

I rent and am looking for a place on my own as its just not suitable because I need peace and quiet while I work. If I was able to get some relief it would help as most places are expensive to rent solo. Also it has been noted by others about the increase in bills since I started working from home.

Thanks in advance for the help - blog is great!

DeeAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-20935929751910683032011-08-11T08:53:38.943-07:002011-08-11T08:53:38.943-07:00What happens if a spouse who is employed in the co...What happens if a spouse who is employed in the company - but doesnt actually own shares?
They may have a controlling interest (for PRSI) but would they keep the PAYE tax creditAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-78691397940032161082011-01-25T21:29:56.988-08:002011-01-25T21:29:56.988-08:00I would say this was a world class write up from y...I would say this was a world class write up from you on PAYE !! can't get a better on!! keep it up

Director Job DescriptionsAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-3424372915123023702011-01-22T15:37:00.532-08:002011-01-22T15:37:00.532-08:00Hi John,
It is generally a little difficult for u...Hi John,

It is generally a little difficult for umbrella company employees to claim home office expenses. However, if you can get your umbrella company provider to allow these expenses then you should do so as it is the umbrella company which bears the burden of any incorrectly claimed expenses and not yourself.

You would generally need to be doing a lot of work from home in order to claim any home office expenses and even then you would fall into the category of an “e-worker”. Revenue allow flat rate expenses of €3.20 per day (as at time of writing) to be paid to e-workers. They do also allow that additional amounts can be claimed where relevant but you would have to demonstrate the cost had been incurred purely and solely as a result of your employment. More information on e-workers can be found here:

http://www.revenue.ie/en/tax/it/leaflets/it69.html

An alternative is to consider using a personal limited company structure rather than an umbrella company structure. A personal limited company will generally allow greater scope for claiming expenses and can therefore sometimes be more tax efficient than umbrella company structures.

Fenero offer personal limited company and umbrella company services. More information about the differences between these structures and their respective advantages and disadvantages on our website at:

http://www.fenero.ie/contractor-solutions/

Or you can contact us on info@fenero.ieSinead Dohertyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934796411222657475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-54711503804948544392011-01-22T15:15:53.277-08:002011-01-22T15:15:53.277-08:00Hi Mick,
In answer to your question, you can gene...Hi Mick,

In answer to your question, you can generally claim whatever portion of the rent that you feel is an accurate reflection of the business use of the property.

However as with any expense that you wish to claim for tax purposes you must be able to provide evidence that the cost was incurred and is a genuine expense. If you have a tenancy agreement in place, this may be acceptable as evidence of the rents being paid. Ideally however you should try to obtain receipts from your landlord.

If you would like any more information, please do not hesitate to contact us on info@fenero.ieSinead Dohertyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934796411222657475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-72221522263824503422011-01-22T13:20:48.756-08:002011-01-22T13:20:48.756-08:00Thanks Darwin, we are glad that you are finding ou...Thanks Darwin, we are glad that you are finding our blog useful!Sinead Dohertyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00934796411222657475noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-2821988190111084772011-01-10T23:39:32.097-08:002011-01-10T23:39:32.097-08:00As umbrella company employee can i cliam home offi...As umbrella company employee can i cliam home office expense, i am renting?R2https://www.blogger.com/profile/17052252346510233173noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3107546137964842648.post-85794670147578398792011-01-10T23:32:48.150-08:002011-01-10T23:32:48.150-08:00New Universal Social Charge rate to be introduced ...New Universal Social Charge rate to be introduced which will replace the health levy and income levy.
